Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Queen's University have developed a theoretical model to understand how social dynamics influence disease transmission, specifically during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their findings indicate that social norms surrounding non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), such as masking, create a “stickiness” effect, causing individuals to hesitate in altering their behaviors when their actions differ from the majority. This phenomenon significantly impacts the spread of infectious diseases.

The model integrates the risk of infection, costs associated with NPIs, and the social cost of diverging from established behavioral norms. It reveals threshold dynamics and tipping points where minimal changes in disease prevalence can lead to substantial shifts in group behavior regarding NPIs. The researchers found that individuals are slow to adopt new protective behaviors until the perceived risk becomes overwhelmingly high, at which point the population collectively shifts.

Moreover, once NPIs are embraced, there's often a reluctance to abandon them, reflecting the "stickiness" of social conformity. The model demonstrates that minor variations in factors such as NPI effectiveness and transmission rates can significantly alter infection patterns, illuminating the intricate relationship between social norms and disease spread, which is essential for policymaking during health crises.
