On December 22, 2024, over 2,500 residents of Okinawa City protested against sexual assaults by U.S. servicemen. They called for apologies and compensation from the Japanese and U.S. governments and for revisions to the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). The protests were ignited by recent incidents, including a U.S. airman’s conviction for assaulting a 15-year-old girl and earlier allegations against a Marine. Speakers emphasized the need for systemic change, with local activist Junko Iraha condemning sexual violence against women and children, demanding accountability, and urging preventive measures against future incidents.
