First-Ever Live Stream from Mars

On June 2, 2023, the European Space Agency (ESA) celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Mars Express mission with a groundbreaking one-hour livestream on YouTube. This event will feature direct images streamed from the spacecraft's Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) every 50 seconds, marking a first in space livestreaming despite an 18-minute delay due to the speed of light and signal processing. Viewers will have a unique chance to experience Mars in near real-time as images are captured and transmitted to Earth.
Historically, most space data is gathered and sent later, but this livestream allows for immediate viewing. While Mars has been observed through other missions, this event aims to bring the Red Planet closer than ever before. The VMC, originally designed for engineering purposes, will showcase its unexpected scientific capabilities, having contributed to our understanding of atmospheric phenomena on Mars, such as cloud formations.
ESA encourages viewers to join using the hashtag #MarsLIVE, with broadcasts starting at 9:00 a.m. PDT (12:00 p.m. EDT, 18:00 CEST). This milestone event not only commemorates a significant mission but also fosters interest in space exploration.
