Even Mild COVID-19 Can Lead to Lasting Harm to Heart Health

A recent study reveals that even mild COVID-19 cases can have significant, lasting impacts on cardiovascular health, specifically increasing arterial stiffness. This research, the first of its kind to compare arterial stiffness levels before and after COVID-19 infection, emphasizes the disease's connection to long-term cardiovascular issues, including elevated risks of heart disease and dementia. Using pre-pandemic baseline measurements from participants involved in another study, the international team observed that individuals who experienced mild COVID-19 showed evidence of stiffer and less functional arteries up to three months post-infection. Co-author Dr. Maria Perissiou noted a surprising decline in vascular health over time, contrasting with the expectation of recovery. Autoimmune processes triggered by COVID-19 may contribute to this vascular deterioration. Led by Professor Ana Jerončić, the study included predominantly young, healthy participants, with few having pre-existing health conditions. The authors caution that the long-term consequences of mild COVID-19 warrant further investigation, as they may lead to an increase in cardiovascular diseases. The paper underscores the need for continued monitoring of cardiovascular health in those who’ve contracted COVID-19 and calls for further research to explore the underlying causes and effects.
